Program:

Our trip to Asia in June 2016 will be the seventh trip to Asia taken by Tabor students and faculty since 1999. It will also be the fourth Tabor global service trip organized since 2014. The popularity of volunteer service is matched at Tabor by interest in global understanding and exchange, and our program will have both goals in mind. During one week of bridge and well construction and English teaching at Kontreang Commune, near Siem Reap, Cambodia, thirty-eight Tabor students and faculty will work, live, and make friends with villagers in the Angkor Wat region of Cambodia.

Goals:

It is our hope that this program and experience will give you some life-long memories. We believe that global citizenship is best learned and practiced through these qualities:

  • collaboration: working together and building teams and partnerships within and across cultures, with respect for each other

  • innovation: taking skills and applying them to unfamiliar settings, with encouragement for initiative and leadership

  • service: helping to make the larger world a better place through action

  • friendship: discovering and enjoying our similarities and differences across the planet

Trip Preparation:

  • January 10th $500 deposit due. Please make check payable to “Stephen Downes”.

  • February 10th copies of passport pages good through January 2017 due; please send scans or paper copies

Plane tickets:

We will arrange transportation between Tabor or Logan Airport in Boston and JFK Airport in New York on both June 9th and June 21st for those that need it. We are currently choosing between a chartered mini-coach and a commercial flight. The total trip cost is $3000 for departure from either Boston or New York. If you wish to book your own plane tickets to meet the group at Siem Reap, the trip cost is $1750 per person. You must schedule your arrival and departure to and from Siem Reap to approximate the group arrival time, so that faculty chaperones are not stretched too thin for coverage. We are not able to split the group rate ticket, so you cannot meet us in Shanghai coming or going. The only group rate ticket is Boston/New York to and from Siem Reap.
